  1. I read "At Home in the Kitchen" by Abby Lieberman. A new vocabulary word that I learned was acid. Flynn, a teenage aspiring top-chef said, "The most important parts of the dish are the salt, the crunch and ACID." The word acid means citrus or a sour flavor.

    I am really inspired by Flynn's work! I'm looking forward to incorporating some of his techniques.

  2. The passage I read was "China's Ancient Army" by Laura Modigliani. A new vocabulary word I learned was archaeologists. Archaeologist means people learn about the past and dig up old stuff to learn more.

  8. The article I read was "Sky-High Ride" by Scholastic. It is about a new roller coaster that has recentlly been added to Glenwood caverns adventure park. A new vocabulary word I learned was Addition they said "The cliffhanger is a new ADDITION to the park".

  9. The article I read was "Falling Stars. A thought that I had after reading this article was why did they catch the athletes now instead of when they were in there prime? An a answer that I came up with was, I think that the athletes planned when they took the sport enhancing drugs because they knew when they were going to do the drug test. So I think they should not tell the athletes when they are doing the drug test and catch them sooner

  22. I read "Falling Stars" by Scholastic. The main idea was about people who took drugs to enhance there preformance in sports. I think they should test the people that are over the average in there time, hits, etc. and/or test the people that get 1st, 2nd or 3rd. I also think that once they take a drug and get caught then go back into playing sports the league should make them be on a sort of holding cell so the person pays for food and the league makes it for them and the same for any kinds of things that you can put drugs to

  23. I read "Falling Stars". I learned that lots of sports legends like Melky Cabrera and Lance Armstrong used drugs to build up their muscles for the game. Cabrera said, "I apologize to my teammates...for letting them down." What were they thinking??

  25. "the great wight shark" An interesting fact that I discovered was that "As the shark swims closer it picks up another signal. Every living creature gives off tiny pulses of electricity. Moving muscles create these pulses. The shark can sense the seal's heartbeat. The signal is faint, but the shark follows it."

  26. over the week i was reading a article called hard, knock, outs, and i found this word called concussion, i did not know what it mean but i know how to say it so i looked it up and found out the meaning and it means a hard blow to the head and can kill you and you can not hit your head on ANY THING.

  28. I read "Debate of the week" and the publisher said "Some schools in D.C,and other cities have longer school days this year"
    some kids want to make the school days longer like David from new york,he says "Recess and lunch are too short kids need more exercise socialize,and relax." He said yes Tare from california said "Kids would find it harder to do after school activities and play sports." She said no. I vote we could just add 30 min to the school day

  30. I read "MENU CHANGES" by Brenda Iasevoli and, I think that since we have a school garden we should actually use it! I am willing to buy plants and spend weekends planting, weeding and eventually harvesting. I think this school should start using the beds so we can have fresh lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and spinach.

    2. Katie, I am so glad that you are inspired by this article. With this inspiration, you can make a significant change in our school community by voicing your concerns. Write a persuasive essay to the PTO and Mrs. Molinaro asking for someone to sponsor the upkeep of our garden. You might find that one small act can create a very large impact. I am impressed with your enthusiasm!

    I think that Its astonishing that a kid that is only 9 can do something that is so great, and I wish that I can one day bring my athletic talents to do something greater than sports.

  32. I read "so long, super sizes?" by Scholastic News. The main idea of my article was how New York has a new law. The law was that because of obesity rates there will be no super sizes (16 ounce cups. )

  33. I read "Pyramid Puzzles" by Zahi Hawass. An interesting fact I discovered was that Zahi Hawass discovers the Great Pyramid in Egypt. The Great Pyramid was built for Khufu when he is dead and in a mummy. Priest had to make the mummies. They had to take the brain out first, then they had to take out the stomach and other parts, but they left the heart because they thought it left the mind and memory. The Priests put salt on him a waited for a month. Then they poured oil and wrapped it in a cloth. It took 70 days.

  34. My second passage is called "Sticky Business" by Dana Jensen. Workers in Mexico make gum from scratch. First they slash a tree and gooey sap comes out. Then workers pour milk through a strainer to remove dirt. after that another worker stirs the sap until its sticky. when he is done another worker shoves it in a box and sends it to other workers who put it in peices.

  37. The article I read was "Bird Brain" by Natalie smith. An interesting fact that I discovered was that a cockatoo named Fiagaro is a little smarter then parrots. Scientist tested him, they put a peanut out of is cage and Fiargaro got a splinter of wood and tried picking up the nut to bring it in the cage. That is what I've learned today in the article.

  39. I read "Smarter Than You Think" By Natalie Smith. The whole purpose of the article was to show that animals can be more intelligent than you might think. Here is an example: A few years ago near Australia people saw some bottle nose dolphins using shells they held in there beak to catch fish. Then they carried the shells to the surface. Once there, they shook the fish out of the shell and into their mouths.

    The article was about how the government thinks there should no longer be pennies because they cost 2¢. But the problem is that if we got rid of pennies then we would lose more money because nickels cost 10¢ to produce. i agree with Obama he said that we should make pennies out of something like steel.

  42. The article I read was "Waiting For Change"By Josh Sanburn.
    The question that people are debating is weather or not to keep the penny. The reason that we are even considering to get rid of the penny is because now days the penny costs 2 cents to make a 1 cent coin! So now my opinion is that we should get rid of the penny and like they suggested in the article, change to Canada's currency. Which today is better than the United States.

  44. I read "Smartest in the Sea?" by Scholastic News. An interesting fact I discovered was that if you listen close enough you might notice that the dolphins are making the same sounds. That might mean that the sound is one of the dolphins name! Isn't that cool?!
