Appealing to the Five Senses

As you are reading, choose a short section or phrase in your book that appeals to 3 out of 5 of our senses.
1)  Chapter Number
2)  Number the item
3) Write down which sense it is...
4) Put the sentence or phrase in quotes...
5) Explain why it appeals to this particular sense....

Example:
1) Chapter 1 from The Secrets of Droon
2) Sense Number 1
3) Hearing
4) "...Hissing noises all around him..."
5) This phrase appeals to the sense of hearing because of the word "hissing".

Making an Inference

1.  Find a passage in your book gives evidence for a specific character trait.

2.  Use this comprehension strategy - "It says... I say... and So...

3.  "It Says"  Write something that you read in the book.

4.  "I say" Explain your background knowledge about this piece in the text.

5.  Write your conclusion...
What does this tell you that the character is feeling ....
What does this tell about the character's personality ...

Literacy Task
Learning Target:  I can deeply read an article of choice and analyze which parts of the article are most important.  I can identify two words that represent the article and explain why I chose them.

1) Go to Ms. Wills' portaportal - guest name lwills (Click on DOGONEWS)
2) Write a topic that interest you in the search box
3) Choose an article.
4) Read the article.
5) Choose two words that represent the most important parts of the article.
6) Explain your thinking process in words.  (Why did you choose those two words?)
7) When finished, draw a diagram explaining the article on the back of your paper.
8) Feel free to make a comment about your discoveries.

We will share our findings.

Fourth Grade Reading Challenge

Today you will be reading for the entire day in your homeroom class.

You may choose one of the following kinds of texts.
1) Time For Kids Magazine Article

4) Chapter Books

5) Any other kind of book...

Once you are done reading one chapter or an article, use the blog to summarize what you have read.  Write at least three sentences.  Do not forget to write the title and author of the book.

If technology fails, please summarize what you have read on a note card.  Every time you submit a blog reading comment or write a summary on a note card, you may add a tally to your class total.

Every fourth grade student will receive a book treat if your class reads at least 60 chapters and/or articles total.

The class with the most tallies and responses will receive a bonus item.:)  Happy Reading!
